After a long and tantalizing wait, the SE W960i is finally here. The über-Walkman, as I call it, this one has 8 GB memory as standard and all the Walkman niceties that so many of us have come to love. It's not just any Walkman though; it's also successor to the W950i; the 4GB Walkman phone that didn't really live up to the hype.
The audio quality of this latest entrant in the Walkman series was as good as was of its previous siblings; quality was excellent from both headphones and speakers. We clicked some really superb and neat shots (indoors as well as outdoors) with its 3.2 MP camera. Though it couldn't match up to the photos clicked with a Nokia N73 or the SE K790i; both 3.2 MP cameraphones which are now priced at 12k. Also, video mode is crippled with a max resolution of 320 x 240; this has been the usual Sony Ericsson standard for their phone and its time they consider a change. Another weird thing we noticed was that the data cable connectivity is not plug-n-play. You have to bear with the hassle of installing drivers each time you connect this phone to a different PC.
The phone also has a few interesting features: TrackID for song identification (using a data connection) and PlayNow. TrackID sends a small section of a song to an online database. It then reverts back with the name of the song, artist name, and also the album name. Using the PlayNow feature you can download latest ringtones with just three simple clicks. Other specs of the phone include a jog dial wheel, FM radio with RDS, and support for Microsoft ActiveSync push-email. It also has Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity built in. So you'll never be wanting for features or space. The only gripes I had with the W960i were the relatively sluggish interface (as compared to newer Series 60 smartphones), the small 900 mAh battery which seemed less for an 8 GB music phone, no cover for the camera lens and the 320 x 240 video recording. Priced just under 30k, it's also not the cheapest music phone around. The way I look at it; a Sandisk 8 GB MicroSDHC card costs 5k. So you could buy a phone with all these features (Nokia N82 for 21k), add the 8 GB card and you'll also get GPS with a brilliant 5MP camera with a Xenon flash.
Buy it if you're a fan of the UIQ interfaces and if you've used the previous UIQ masterpieces; viz the P910i and P990i
